Lorch Schmidt lathe added to my collection

No, no, no, no !.........I promised myself not to buy any more lathes this year ! Instead of that I planned to put more energy in finding an old camelback drillpress ! I still haven't found a decent one, so that's the thing to focus on right now ! But what would you do if a beauty like this shows up within 25 km from your home.....Yes!... ofcourse...BUY IT! So I did..... It's an old Lorch Schmidt heavy plainturning lathe from the early 1900. Complete with original driveshaft and on its original makers stand. This week I picked it up and gave it it's own little place in my shop and ofcourse on this website. You can see some first pictures in the "Lorch Schmidt" section of this site. Have fun...!

hi Gerrith
I have also acquired this lathe this week
see the vertical lever to the left of the picture? do you know what that does?
Jack
Hi Jack,
Congrats with your purchase, Great machines and high quality !
The lever is to engage and disangage the backgears with the maingears on the main spindle (through an eccentric shaft). When you disconnect the pin on the front of the bullgear (the big gear on the mainspindle) and the gears are engaged you will see that the mainspindle will now turn on a 1:4 (1:5)slow speed ratio. NOTE: Don't forget to disconnect the pin before(!!!) you start the machine !!!!!! Ontherwise the whole thing will jam and you ruin the gears. Just try it and you will see what happens...
Do you have pictures...?? I'd like to see some...
Regards,
Gerrit.
dag gerrit,
